12/16/10

I call this telephone art. When I am having a long conversation on the phone, I often grab a sketch pad, pen and colored pencils and start drawing. With my hand engaged, I can concentrate on the conversation more intently. By the time I hang up, I have a piece of artwork that I barely noticed creating. It just evolves as the conversation does. I like to think it is infused with the connection between two people sharing life stories.

Mom, this "doodle" is so you. I look at it, and have an image of you with the phone clamped against your shoulder with your cheek, sitting in the O'Neils' wicker chair, chatting away, mindlessly switching colored pencils. When I was much younger I'd tug at your pants for attention, but nothing distracted you. So glad you're finally sharing this artwork! It's amazing.

The amazing thing is that Granny did it, too.
Next to every phone in our house, there was a white note pad covered with squiggle designs that she had created while talking on the phone.

Look at the layers of archetypes - you're channeling. Like drawing with your left hand. Plus, it's beautiful.
